Harmony Glamping Tulum, Mexico
Harmony Glamping Tulum is one of those special destinations which has it all. Based on an organic, permaculture farm in Tulum, Mexico they offer top of the class glamping accommodation whilst still being just a 5 minute walk from the bustling town centre. Average temperature in Tulum is round about 90 degrees (it’s rarely less than 70 or over 90) and, with a coastal breeze, the temperature feels manageable once you’re acclimatized.
Located on the Yucatan peninsula, Tulum sits on a bluff facing East, looking out onto the Caribbean Sea. The town is most famous for its well preserved coastal Mayan walled city – one of the last built by the Mayan people. The city was at its height between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, their traditional way of life (and probable worship of the ‘Descending’ or ‘Diving God’) was eventually disrupted by Spanish settlers who brought old world diseases with them. The ruins are just 4km from Harmony Glamping Tulum and, as they can provide bicycles for rent, it’s a very achievable trip!
Harmony Glamping do rent suites in the main house, but we’re not about suites.. we’re all about glamping! And Harmony Glamping Tulum knows how to glamp! They have six ‘onion-style’ bell tents in the grounds of the farm. At 13ft in diameter and more than 9ft tall, these bad boys are spacious! Each one has it’s own distinct personality but they all boast a Queen sized bed with organic cotton sheets, solid wooden floors, fans, verandahs and mosquito netting. There is a beautifully-clean shared bathroom for all the tents (making it proper ‘camping’ in our opinion) and they provide 100% natural and biodegradable shampoos and soap.
You can take part in yoga, massage and tours to the surrounding area. Being based on that organic permaculture farm they also offer workshops, volunteer programs, guided tours – and fabulous locally grown produce (including honey and coffee) for sale. As well as all this.. they now have an on-site chef to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner which might include bread or pizzas cooked in their pizza oven!
With insanely high levels of ecological commitment Harmony Glamping Tulum are the proud holders of a Green Leader award from Trip Advisor. Most of the property has been built by traditional methods using sustainable materials.
We wanted to know more so we got in touch to ask a few questions….
What’s great about your set-up?
We are located in the grounds of Green Beat Tulum, a permaculture, oriented organic farm that grows produce for local restaurants in the heart of Tulum centre. We are a mere 7 km from the beach, and a 5 minute walk from all the great bars, shops and restaurants in town.
Our funky, bell shaped tents are 13 ft in diameter and come equipped with a queen size bed fitted with cotton sheets, a fan, a small closet for your clothes and with an exterior table/chairs to hang out. Each tent is decorated uniquely according to a theme, and our common washrooms (which are separated into women and men´s) are always kept sparkling clean. We also offer two Jr. suites with A/C, a private en suite bathroom, kitchen and living room. We offer amazing tours all around the greater Tulum region and will be happy to provide tips for yummy eats and drinks in town. If you are interested in attending some of the permaculture workshops or joining the volunteer program at the farm, please let us know and we will be happy to help organise it for you.
Whereabouts are you?
We are located in Tulum, Mexico, 100 meters off the main highway between Cancun and Tulum, in Mexico´s amazing Mayan Riviera. We are nestled in the grounds of Green Beat Tulum, a permaculture, oriented organic farm which grows produce for local restaurants in the heart of Tulum centre.
What’s the number one activity that most glampers do at your location?
I would say that the most popular activity is to go to the pristine beaches that Tulum has to offer, as well as a visit to the Mayan pyramids in Tulum, followed closely by visits to Cenotes and the Siaan Kaan biosphere reserve.
What’s the best piece of advice or most commonly asked question about glamping with you?
Be respectful of your neighbours at the camp site, and do not smoke near the tents. Respect, love and live nature to the fullest. It is our greatest gift….
When did you start the business?
The Green Beat Farm started its operations in Nov 2011… Harmony Glamping Tulum opened in Feb 2015
Is it your first business or what did you do before?
Xavier Fux, had a hotel, restaurant and record label in Playa del Carmen from 1995-2002 called Zulu Lounge. During this time, he was also a Dj/music producer in Ibiza/Mexico and travelled the world spinning at clubs and festivals for about 10 years. Seeing the world and meeting amazing people everywhere, made him realise the importance of not only respecting nature and our planet, but also in taking prompt steps in order to try to become part of the solution rather than continuing to be part of the problem. This led him to study Permaculture in Costa Rica and Ethiopia, which led him to eventually open the farm and The Harmony Glamping Hotel.
Massimiliano and Ilenia Mosera partner with Xavier in the enterprise. They originally come from Rome and have been running their own hotel Exscape in Tulum for 5 years. They have a big love for animals and ran a shelter in Tulum to protect them.
What is your favourite place to go camping?
Joshua Tree National Park in California.
Freestyle – tell us something that isn’t public knowledge!
We will be purchasing more tents in the near future and are looking for a strategic partner to open a vegetarian restaurant in the hotel grounds.
